Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder caused due to rise in the levels of glucose and sugar levels in the blood. The body of a diabetic patient is unable to produce the optimum amount of insulin, which is required for the absorption of sugar and glucose. This lack of insulin causes diabetes. Diabetes Mellitus is known to Indians from Vedic period onwards by the name Asrava (Prameha). Diabetes is also known as Madhumeha in Ayurveda. Madhumeha has become a global problem in spite of advances in modern science. India has been projected by WHO as the country with the fastest growing population of Diabetic patients. It is estimated that between 1995 – 2025 diabetic patients in India will increase by 195%.

According to Ayurveda, Diabetes is divided in 4 major types (and total 21 types)

  1. Kapha type (sub-divided into 10 types)
  2. Pitta type (sub-divided into 6 types)
  3. Vata type (sub-divided into 4 types)
  4. Juvenile diabetes for children (for unhealthy practices of parents and/or due to the sins of past-birth)

Just like any other disease, diabetes too has its own set of symptoms. Excessive urine formation and frequent urination, diminished or increased hunger and thirst are some of the most common symptoms.

Blurry vision, skin infection, delayed heeling of wounds on skin and a uniform sweet taste in mouth that stays can be counted among the early signs of diabetes.
